ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Chioma Okoli scored 19 points to rally UNC Asheville past Johnson C. Smith 84-78 in non-conference women's basketball action at Justice Center Saturday afternoon.

 

The Bulldogs (3-6) also got a great game from Kendall Shepard as the sophomore guard tallied 17 points. Jessica Monroe had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ana Baker had nine assists and two steals.

 

The Golden Bulls (5-4) were led by Demetria Bell with a game-high 20 points. Wendy Stywalt finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Janai Jackson contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Terran Quattlebaum added 10 points off the bench.

 

Okoli went 7-of-14 from the field, while Shepard finished 7-of-10.

 

“We battled hard today and a good win against a very good Johnson C. Smith club,” commented UNC Asheville coach Betsy Blose. “We had a hard time stopping them throughout the day but we kept plugging away and executed down the stretch.”

 

Johnson C. Smith led 74-72 as Jackson hit two free throws at the 2:55 mark to give the Golden Bulls their final lead. Okoli hit two free throws to tie the game and then scored on a three-point play at the 1:40 mark to give UNC Asheville the lead for good at 77-74.

 

Stywalt scored inside to cut the lead to 77-76 before Shepard knocked down a 10-footer to pad the lead to 79-76. Two free throws from Demetria Bell narrowed the lead to 79-78 with 52 seconds remaining.

 

The Bulldogs then got a basket from freshman forward Linda Aughburns to give Asheville an 81-78 advantage at the 36-second mark. Kyla Jones then stole the ball and was fouled intentionally with 19 second left. She hit one free throw to make it 82-78. Baker and Shepard hit one free throw each over the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.

 

The Golden Bulldogs led 45-41 at halftime and quickly built on the lead after intermission. Leading 47-43, the visitors embarked on a 12-4 run to build a 59-47 lead with 15 minutes left.

 

The Bulldogs rallied and chipped away at the lead and finally tied the game at 64-64 with eight minutes remaining on an Okolia jumper.

 

Johnson C. Smith controlled most of the first half as Stywalt scored 11 points in the half as the Golden Bulls built a 13-point lead at 31-18 with five minutes to go.

 

The Bulldogs rallied as they got back-to-back three-pointers from Shepard and closed to 43-41 on two free throws from Monroe at the seven-second mark. Stywalt closed the half off with two free throws with second remaining giving the visitors a 45-41 halftime advantage.

 

Johnson C. Smith was hot from the field in the opening half as it shot 54 percent (17-of-31). After a slow start, Asheville finished at 48 percent (15-of-31) from the field. Shepard and Monroe combined for 23 points. Ana Baker had five assists in the first half.

 

UNC Asheville plays next at Campbell on Thursday night (Dec. 18) starting at 7 p.m.
