ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Reid Augst scored 20 points to lead UNC Asheville to an 84-67 victory over previously unbeaten Catawba at Justice Center Saturday evening.

The win by the Bulldogs (4-5) snapped a five-game losing streak, while the 10th-ranked NCAA Division II Indians fell to 8-1 on the season.

Augst led a balanced UNC Asheville attack in the win. Junior forward Jason Ridenhour added a career-best 17 points. He also collected seven rebounds and had four steals. Eric Stubbs made his first career start a good one with a career-best 12 points. Freshman guard J.P. Primm chipped in 11 points.

Catawba was led by Donzell Williams with 14 points. Rob Fields came off the bench to score 12 points. Dominick Reid chipped in 11 points. UNC Asheville's defense did a nice job on Indians' leading scorer Antonio Houston as he was held to just four points. The junior forward entered the contest averaging 20 points per game.

“I'm very pleased to get this win,” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We've had a tough week with exams but our guys were really focused today and ready to play.

“Catawba is a very good team, and we have a great deal of respect for their program,” added Biedenbach. “I thought we did a great job on defense throughout the day and received contributions from a lot of different players today. This is a big win for us as we go into a tough part of our schedule.”

The Bulldogs led the entire game. They set the tone early jumping out to a 10-2 lead as Augst and Ridenhour combined for eight early points. Asheville continued to build on the lead and pushed it to 27-15 on Ridenhour dunk at the 5:27 mark.

The Indians made a run to close the half as they began to dominate the boards. Catawba got the final 12 rebounds of the half and crept to 33-26 at halftime. Fields scored six points in the final five minutes.

The Bulldogs built the led to 47-34 in the first five minutes of the second half as Ridenhour had six early points. Catawba made another run and got to 52-44 on a jumper from Donald Rutherford at the 12:48 mark.

Asheville responded with a 6-0 run as Augst knocked down a three-pointer to get the lead back to 58-44. The Indians made one more run and got to 63-54 on two free throws from Houston at the 6:42 mark. But the Bulldogs scored the next nine points over a two-minute stretch as John Williams scored five points and blocked two shots on the defensive end to spark the home team.

Catawba could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Asheville shot 49 percent from the field at 32-of-66. The Indians had a tough day shooting all the way around. They shot just 33 percent (25-of-77) from the field and 20 percent (5-of-25) from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs are on the road for their next three games. UNC Asheville plays at Duke for the first time ever on Wednesday night and that game will be televised on ESPN 2 starting at 7:30 p.m.
