Augst leads Bulldogs Past Belmont Abbey 75-63

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Reid Augst scored 19 points, while John Williams added a career-high 16 points to lead UNC Asheivlle to a 75-63 season-opening win over Belmont Abbey Friday night at Justice Center

 

The Bulldogs (1-0) won their season opener for the third straight season. The Crusaders (0-1) were led by Richard Barbee with 18 points.

 

UNC Asheville was also aided by junior forward Jason Ridenhour who scored a career-high 12 points. The Mooresville native went 6-of-8 from the field and had a blocked shot. Augst was 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.  Williams went 7-of-11 from the field and collected a team-high eight rebounds.

 

“We didn't play as well as we could have, but I think we beat a good team in Belmont Abbey,” stated UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. “We had way too many turnovers and didn't finish the game the way I would have liked. However, we're a very young team and we found a way to win tonight, and we can certainly build on that.”

 

The game was close in the first half as the Crusaders trailed 30-28 with four minutes to go before intermission. Augst led Asheville on a 10-3 run to end the half as the Bulldogs build a 40-31 halftime lead. The senior forward scored eight of the home team's 10 points during the run to give Asheville a working margin. Augst had 16 points in the first half and went 6-of-7 from the field. Barbee kept Belmont-Abbey close with 11 points.

 

The Bulldogs held off several Crusader charges early in the second half before building a 17-point lead midway through the half. Ridenhour was 4-of-5 from the field in the second half.

 

The Crusaders could get no closer than the final margin.

 

Freshman guard JP Primm had six assists and three steals for the Bulldogs. Donovan Jones had five assists and collected six rebounds.

 

Jonathan Jackson had 10 points for Belmont Abbey. Chris McDowell just missed a double-double with eight points and 13 rebounds. The Crusaders out-rebounded Asheville, 43-37. However, the Bulldogs limited the Crusaders to just 35 percent shooting (21-of-60) from the field.

 

“We did a pretty good job on defense tonight,” commented Biedenbach. “However, we really got beat bad on the boards and that has to get better immediately.”

 

The Bulldogs play again this Sunday afternoon against Montreat starting at 4:30 p.m.

 

NOTES ? The win was head coach Eddie Biedenbach's 196th career victory...Asheville has won 18 of its last 22 home games dating back to the 2006-07 season...the Bulldogs have won 28 of their last 39 games dating back to the 2006-07 season...Asheville finished the game with six blocked shots.
