Dogs Down Wolfpack in Five Sets; Benorden Earns All-Tournament

Volleyball Drops Third-Straight to Presbyterian

10.07.2008 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C.?Kelsey Benorden had 15 kills and 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the season and Heather Burns added nine kills but UNC Asheville dropped its third consecutive match 17-25, 25-19, 15-22, and 25-20 to Presbyterian on Tuesday night.

Presbyterian snapped a five-match losing streak and won its first ever Big South Conference match. Kelsey McKee led the Blue Hose with 15 kills while Amanda Kettles and Heather Swain each had 12 kills. Elizabeth Heineman led PC with 21 digs, Lisa Shelley and Ashley Dunlap each had 12 for the Blue Hose who hit .231 on the match.

Asheville never trailed in the first set using six blocks and taking advantage of five PC service errors to win by a comfortable 25-17 score.  The second set was following form as the Bulldogs built a 12-6 lead in the second set. PC fought back to 16-14 before going on an 8-0 run to take control of the set 22-16. The Bulldogs made six attack errors during the run and hit -.028 in the set.

The third set was back and forth to 15-15. PC won eight of the next 10 points to take a 22-17 lead. Asheville would get as close as 24-22 but McKee put away the set with a kill to put the Blue Hose up two sets to one.

PC kept the momentum in the final set leading 10-6 before Benorden caught fire. Benroden had six kills in three rotations as the Dogs went on a 14-6 run to take a 20-16 lead. The key point in the set came at that score when during a long rally; a double contact was missed by the officials allowing the point to continue. Kettles put the ball away to put PC to within three points and Asheville would not score again. The Blue Hose scored the final eight points, all with Benorden in the back row taking advantage of three more Asheville hitting errors and a net violation.

“This was a disappointing match,” said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. “We started very strong and we allowed PC to gain momentum and confidence by making mistakes. PC played well and they deserved to win but we have to play more consistently and we can not rely on one player to carry us.”

Both teams head to Virginia this weekend. Asheville faces Radford on Friday at 7 p.m. while Presbyterian travels to Liberty.
