ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Road games at UNC Chapel Hill, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech plus 16 regular-season home games highlights the 2007-08 UNC Asheville men's basketball schedule. The schedule was announced by Bulldog head coach Eddie Biedenbach today.
The 16 home games is the most by a UNC Asheville squad in 25 years as the 1982-83 squad also played 16 home games. Counting two exhibition games, the Bulldogs will play 18 times at Justice Center.
"We're very excited about this year's schedule," commented Biedenbach. "We really like the fact we're going to play so many home games this season. The schedule is still pretty challenging but we're looking forward to those challenges."
The Bulldogs play 15 non-conference games this season and play a home-and-home series with Campbell. It is the first time UNC Asheville has had a home-and-home non-conference series in a season since the 1986-87 year when the Bulldogs played Marshall twice. In addition, UNC Asheville hosts Lees-McRae and Buffalo for the first time ever.
Biedenbach's club plays two exhibition games against local foes. The Bulldogs host Mars Hill on Nov. 1 and then welcome Warren Wilson to the Justice Center on Nov. 5. The Owls are coached by former UNC Asheville forward Billy Allen.
Asheville opens the regular season with three straight home games for the first time since the 1984-85 campaign. The Bulldogs play Furman on Nov. 9 in their home opener and then take on Lees-McRae (Nov. 11) and Brevard (Nov. 13).
The Dogs hit the road for two games as they'll play at Campbell (Nov. 17) and mountain rival Western Carolina (Nov. 20). Asheville heads home and entertains Atlantic Sun regular-season champion East Tennessee State (Nov. 24) and Tusculum (Nov. 27).
The Bulldogs travel to Blacksburg, Va. for a meeting with Virginia Tech. The Hokies went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Asheville returns home to host Campbell (Dec. 13) and South Carolina State (Dec. 17). The Dogs final game before Christmas comes in Knoxville when they take on "Sweet 16" participant Tennessee (Dec. 19).
After Christmas, UNC Asheville plays two home games right before the end of the month. A meeting with Buffalo of the Mid-American Conference (Dec. 29) is followed by a game with NAIA power Montreat (Dec. 31).
January starts with two games on the road. The Bulldogs play at the Colonial Center against South Carolina (Jan. 5) before traveling to the Smith Center to battle defending ACC champion UNC Chapel Hill (Jan. 9).
Asheville opens Big South Conference play with two consecutive home games as the Dogs hosts Liberty (Jan. 12) and High Point (Jan. 16). Defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop invades the Justice Center in early February (Feb. 2). The Bulldogs finish the regular season with two of their final three games at Justice Center. Asheville takes on Charleston Southern (Feb. 23) for homecoming and then welcomes Coastal Carolina (Feb. 27) to the Justice Center for the final regular-season home game of the year.
The Dogs complete the regular season at Winthrop (March 1). The Big South Conference Tournament begins on March 4 with quarterfinal games on campus sites. The semifinals are slated to be played at the regular-season champion on March 6 with the title game being played on March 8 at the site of the highest seed remaining in the tournament.
