ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's basketball team will enter the 2007 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Tournament as the fifth seed and will face fourth-seeded Coastal Carolina Tuesday night on the road starting at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by WISE (1310-AM) and www.uncabulldogs.com.
Just a week ago, the Bulldogs (11-18, 6-8 BSC) were battling to stay out of the cellar but Asheville has won three straight entering the league tournament and moved from a tie for seventh place to fifth. The Dogs won their third straight game Saturday evening at Charleston Southern, 73-56. The Bulldogs entered the day tied with VMI for fifth place but when the Keydets lost at High Point Saturday, 109-92, Asheville got the fifth seed and VMI earned the sixth seed.
The Bulldogs split with the Chanticleers this season. Coastal Carolina won on Jan. 8 at Justice Center, 68-60 before Asheville earned a hard-fought 82-77 win last Thursday night at Kimbel Arena. The game is also a rematch of last year's quarterfinal game that Coastal Carolina won, 78-62. It will be the fifth meeting between the teams in Big South Tournament play with each squad winning two games each.
Following the four quarterfinal games on Tuesday, the 2007 Advance Auto Parts Men's Basketball Championship will continue with the Semifinals on Thursday, March 1 in Rock Hill, S.C. -- both games will air live on ESPNU -- and concludes with the Championship game on Saturday, March 3 live on ESPN and Sirius Satellite Radio. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:
