ROCK HILL, S.C. - Great starting pitching from Graham Baughn allowed UNC Asheville to advance in the opening round of the 2007 Big South Conference baseball tournament as the Bulldogs downed Charleston Southern, 3-0 at the Winthrop Ballpark.
The junior right-hander picked up his first career shutout by limiting the Buccaneers to just three hits. He struck out a career-high eight and walked three. Baughn improved his record to 7-5.
"Graham Baughn was just tremendous today," commented UNC Asheville coach Willie Stewart. "He did a superb job keeping Charleston Southern off balance. Graham has pitched well all year long and today he was just sensational."
"This was a great way to start the tournament," added Stewart. "We played well today and got the hits when we needed to get them."
The defending Big South Conference champion Bulldogs (21-36) will play top-seeded Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Alan DeRatt will throw for Asheville against David Anderson for Coastal.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning. Catcher J.K. Whited opened the inning with a single. He moved to second when Matt Henson walked. Kevin Mattison's bunt had Whited thrown out at third for the first out of the inning.
Schumer then delivered his clutch hit and his run-scoring single scored Henson to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Mattison reached third on the play. Rob Vernon reached on a fielders' choice that scored Mattison to push the Asheville lead to 2-0.
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth. With one out, Mattison singled. He then stole second and went to third on Vernon's infield single. David Williams then produced a run-scoring single to plate Mattison and give the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage.
Vernon extended his hitting streak to 18 games. The win is just the third for Asheville this season when it scored less than four runs. The Bulldogs are 3-20 in games they score less than four runs.
