CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern blew a 12 point second half lead but came back to score seven points in the final 11 seconds to defeat UNC Asheville 76-73 Wednesday night in Big South women's basketball action.
UNC Asheville (14-10, 5-4 Big South) trailed 53-41 at the 11:46 mark of the second half but mounted a furious comeback behind Brittany Hendley who scored all 16 of her points in the second half and a 15 point, 11 rebound effort from Stacy Shepard. Ashton Barton chipped in 10 points for Asheville.
The Bulldogs took their first lead since the 13:08 mark of the first half when Rachel Williams scored her only two points of the night to give Asheville a 71-69 lead with 1:30 left to play. Shepard grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed free throw and scored to give the Dogs a four point lead at 73-69 with just 19 seconds remaining.
Charleston Southern's (10-14, 2-7 Big South) Tina DeCarvalho hit her fourth three-pointer of the night from the left corner to pull the Bucs within one point at 73-72 with 11 second left on the clock.
The Bulldogs turned the ball over in the back court and Pam Tolbert hit a shot in the lane to put CSU back on top 74-73 with five ticks left on the clock. Asheville turned the ball over again in the back court and was forced to foul but the Bulldogs had only committed four fouls in the second half. The Dogs finally put Keena Wicker on the line with one second left. Wicker knocked down the only two free throws of the game for CSU to provide the final margin.
Natalie Caldwell scored a game-high 20 points for the Bucs. Wicker and Tobert each had 16 points and DeCarvalho added 14 for CSU. The Bucs hit on 53 percent (33-for-62) of their shots from the floor and 40 percent (8-for-20) from three-point range.
Asheville shot 44 percent (29-for-66) from the floor and 33 percent (8-for-24) from long range. The Bulldogs were just 7-for-14 from the free throw line but out-rebounded the Bucs 40-30. The Dogs had 23 second chance points but committed 19 turnovers.
The Bulldogs return to the Justice Center for Homecoming on Saturday, Feb. 17. The Dogs host Winthrop in a 2 p.m. game that will be shown tape-delay on Asheville Educational Television-16 and can be heard live on AM 1310-WISE and on the internet at bigsouthsports.com.
