GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman scored three goals in an eight minute span during the second half, and Anna Betton scored a goal in her fifth straight game as Furman defeated UNC Asheville 3-1 on Wednesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Furman (8-7-1) held the possession for most of the first half. In the 27th minute, Rachel Fry looked to have beaten UNC Asheville (5-4-2) goalkeeper Veronica Lazar, but her shot from 27 yards out slammed off the woodwork.
UNC Asheville nearly opened the scoring in the 44th minute as Robyn Busha was in behind the Furman defense and one-on-one with goalkeeper Briana da Mota, but Busha's shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Furman broke through just after the intermission as Lucy Martin scored in the 47th minute. Sara El-Shami played a low cross through the penalty area that got past a charging Lazar. Martin ran onto the ball at the far post and shot the ball into an empty net for her second goal of the season.
Rachel Fry extended the Lady Paladin lead in 50th minute. Fry dribbled through the defense from the right side and got open in the middle of the penalty area. Her shot from 12 yards out beat the keeper to the left side.
The Lady Paladins added another goal in the 55th minute as Anna Betton added her eighth goal of the season. Betton received a long pass from Mickey Palanza at midfield and dribbled toward goal, beating two UNC Asheville defenders on her way. Lazar came off her line, and Betton placed her shot to the high corner from ten yards out. Betton has now scored a goal in five straight matches.
UNC Asheville got on the board in the 89th minute as Ashleigh Carter scored her third goal of the season. Carter beat her defender and outraced everyone to the penalty area. Furman substitute goalkeeper Jennifer Dobbs got a hand on Carter's shot but the ball deflected into the back of the net.
The Bulldogs will return to Big South Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Coastal Carolina for a 7 p.m. game.
