ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Charleston Southern freshman forward Briana Murphy scored two goals, including the game-winner midway through the second overtime period as the Lady Bucs upset UNC Asheville, 2-1 in Big South Conference women's soccer action at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (4-3-0, 1-1-0 BSC) lost the match despite outshooting the Lady Bucs (3-5-0, 2-0-0 BSC), 22-14. Asheville trailed for most of the match before tying the match with less than five minutes in regulation on a goal from freshman Robyn Busha.
"This is a tough match to lose," commented Asheville coach Michele Cornish. "We played well at times and had some great chances to score but we just didn't finish. Give Charleston Southern credit. They played very well and were able to get the win in overtime."
The loss ended a nine-game unbeaten streak for the Bulldogs in Big South Conference play. UNCA's last loss in a regular-season league match came on Nov. 1 when it loss at Birmingham-Southern, 3-2.
With the match tied 1-1, the teams battled through the first overtime period as Asheville senior forward Hilary McKay had a chance to win it but her 10-yard shot went just wide of the goal. Katie Crona of CSU had a chance to win it at the end of the first overtime period but her shot was stopped by Asheville goalkeeper Mich Mattos.
In the second overtime period, Jessica Kim sent a long pass to Murphy. The freshman from Boone, N.C. dribbled 10 yards and then blasted an eight-yard shot that found the back of net to give the Lady Bucs a 2-1 victory at the 104:57 mark.
UNCA had tied the match in dramatic fashion. With less than five minutes left in regulation, Busha took a pass from Shoshana Fried and hit a shot from 20 yards out to knot the game at 1-1 at the 84:11 mark.
The Bulldogs poured on the pressure in the last four minutes of regulation and nearly won it as McKay and Busha had shots that just missed the target.
CSU opened the scoring when Murphy headed in a ball on a direct kick from Maggie Martini. Martini was 30 yards out and sent the ball to the goal area when Murphy came from nowhere to head the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Lady Buc lead at the 33:19 mark.
UNC Asheville plays next at defending Big South Conference champion Birmingham-Southern Friday night (Sept. 30) at 7 p.m. CST.
