BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner Webb had 18 hits and scored six runs in the fourth inning as the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated UNC Asheville 16-7 on Tuesday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (18-23) scored three runs in the first inning off UNCA starter Alan DeRatt. Matt Higginson led off with a triple and scored on a RBI-single by Ryan Sickels. Matt Maloney got his first of four RBI on the day with a double that scored Sickels. Joey Testa also had an RBI single in the inning to make the score 3-0.
Asheville (11-29) took the lead with four in the top of the third. Tony Campana extended his hitting streak to 17-straight games with a single up the middle and would come into score on a bases loaded single by Elliott Arrington, on the play, a fielding error by the center fielder allowed Ben Kerr to also score. Nathan Durham drove in Josh Coyle to tie the game and Arrington would score on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
The lead was short lived as Gardner-Webb scored three in the bottom of the third and then six in the fourth highlighted by a three-run home run by Maloney to make the score 12-4.
The Runnin' Bulldogs extended the lead with two runs in the sixth curiosy of a pair of untimely wild pitches with runners at third base.
Asheville picked up two in the seventh, as once again Campana started the rally with a hit. Kerr was hit by a pitch and Coyle singled to lead the bases. Arrington single home Campana and a throwing error by the second baseman allowed Kerr to also score on the play.
After GWU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, UNCA scored the final run of the game in the eighth as Tony Wall hit a solo home run to left-center for his third homer of the year.
Arrington finished the day 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Campana, Kerr, Coyle each had two hits. The top four batters in the UNCA order combined for nine of the team's 13 hits.
Wes Cogdill picked up the win to improve to 3-5 giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings. DeRatt took the loss to drop to 1-9.
UNCA was suppose to play Western Carolina on Wednesday at McCormick Field but that game has been canceled due to facility issues. The Bulldogs next game will be on Friday, April 30 at Furman. The game will be broadcast on live365.com and uncabulldogs.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
