ASHEVILLE, - The UNC Asheville men's basketball team returns home Friday night (Feb. 18) for a crucial Big South Conference game against Coastal Carolina at Justice Center. The game will be regionally televised by FoxSportsNetSouth (channel 28 in the Asheville area) and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:07 p.m.
The Bulldogs have won seven of their last 10 games after a 68-59 home victory over Birmingham-Southern Monday night. UNCA has improved its overall record to 10-14 and is 7-6 in league play. The Bulldogs are tied for third place in the league with High Point. However, Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern are right behind Asheville tied for fourth at 6-7. The Chanticleers ripped the Bulldogs, 70-54 in Conway back on Jan. 31.
UNC Asheville head coach Eddie Biedenbach knows this is a big game for his team Friday night.
"We're playing pretty good basketball right now but we face a big test Friday night against Coastal Carolina," stated Biedenbach. "This is a huge game for both teams. We want to be at home for the first round of the Big South Conference Tournament and so does Coastal Carolina. Both of us really need to win this game. It should be a great game, and our team is looking forward to playing at home Friday night."
The Bulldogs need to improve in all areas of the game against Coastal Carolina Friday night. The Chanticleers played great defense against Asheville on Jan. 31 as they limited the Dogs to a Big South season-low 54 points. UNCA shot just 32 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from the three-point line. Coastal Carolina dominated the boards, 58-38.
"We simply didn't play very well the first time against Coastal Carolina," commented Biedenbach. "A lot of that had to do with the way Coastal Carolina played. Pete Strickland (Coastal Carolina's head coach) has done a great job with this team. We've been playing real well on the boards the past few weeks but that game they dominated. We're simply going to have to play much better to have a chance to win."
