ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior midfielder Greg Yelverton scored his first goal of the season to help UNC Asheville tie Appalachian State, 1-1 Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (6-9-2) enter next week's Big South Conference Tournament with a 2-0-1 record in their last three matches. UNCA plays Winthrop Thursday afternoon (Nov. 11) at Noon CST at Birmingham-Southern in the quarterfinals of the league tournament. The Mountaineers finish the regular season with a 9-6-2 overall record. ASU hosts Furman Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament.
"We played some good soccer today against a very talented Appalachian State team," commented Asheville coach Steve Cornish. "We would have liked to have gotten a victory but a tie was probably the fairest result on the day. Both teams had good chances to win the match."
ASU opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark of the match when Tate Parrish slipped in a shot off a rebound for a 1-0 Mountaineer lead. Corey Lugger was credited with an assist on the goal.
It stayed 1-0 until midway through the second half. Nathan Neal made a pass to Yelverton who then blasted the ball into the right corner of the net from 25 yards out. The goal tied the match at 1-1.
Both teams had chances to win as Neal just missed on a shot with 10 minutes left. ASU's best chance came early in overtime when Matt Breeding hit the post, got the rebound and shot again but Bulldog goalkeeper Michael Pereira came up with a save.
