Gib's First Half Goal Powers Bulldogs Past High Point on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer saw a first-half goal from Alex Gib power the Bulldogs past High Point 1-0 at Greenwood Field on Saturday (Sept. 26), with Asheville snapping an eight-match losing streak in the series with their first win against the Panthers since a 1-0 victory back on Oct. 7, 2017. The victory also marks the first time since 2008 that the Bulldogs have started 2-0-0 in conference play.
 
The Bulldogs came out applying pressure in the first few minutes, and it would pay off early in the match. Manuela Schreier left a ball back to Campbell Stoll who played a long ball into the High Point end to the middle of the pitch. Gib was able to corral the ball almost in stride to make a move around a defender and High Point's goalkeeper to stash home her first goal as a Bulldog and first of her career that would ultimately be the game-winner. The assist for Stoll was her third of the season and ninth of her career, while Schreier picked up her first assist of the season and second of her career on the play. Asheville would hold its 1-0 lead at the half, despite High Point outshooting them 5-3 in the half.
 
The teams traded runs, possession and chances in the second half, but it was ultimately Asheville coming up with key defensive plays and some outstanding saves from London Phoenix as the Bulldogs were able to preserve the clean sheet, their third of the season. Asheville was able to outshoot High Point 4-3 in the second half, and earn two corner kicks in the frame while holding High Point without one.
 
Asheville totaled seven shots in the match with three on frame to go along with three corner kicks in the match. Kandis Calvin and Lili Adams each had two shots in the match, while Gib, Lilly Graumann and Georgia Duke each had one shot in the match. Phoenix (5-3-2) made three saves in her third shutout of the season.
 
The Bulldogs (5-3-3, 2-0-0 Big South) return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 30) at Radford in Big South Conference action. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Radford, Va. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
