Baseball Battles, Drops Series Opener at Radford on Friday

RADFORD, Va. - UNC Asheville Baseball battled, but dropped its series opener at Radford on Friday (May 8) by a score of 9-5.
 
Asheville struck first with three runs in the top of the first, with Logan Lowe leading off the game with a single before Blaize Johnson singled to right field to put two runners on with nobody out in the opening frame. After a fly ball moved both runners up and a walk to Patrick Gillen loaded the bases, Jake Minarik reached on a fielder's choice to third base that allowed Lowe to score the game's first run. Ben Green delivered the big blow in the inning with a double to center that scored Johnson and Gillen for a 3-0 Bulldog lead. Radford scored once in the first and once in the second to get back within 3-2, before the teams traded scoreless frames in the third and Radford scored four runs in the fourth for a 6-3 lead heading to the fifth. After Lowe scored his second run of the night reaching on a fielder's choice by Owen Michelson, Radford added another run to keep their lead at 7-4 heading to the sixth. The teams traded runs in the sixth, with Asheville's run coming on a Tyler Parks steal of home as Radford led 8-5 heading to the eighth. After a scoreless seventh, Radford added one run in the bottom of the eighth to ultimately bring the game to its final score.
 
Lowe, Green and Parks each paced the offense with two hits, while Johnson, Michelson, Gillen and Jake Pereira each had one hit in the game for the Bulldogs. Green drove in two runs in the game, while Minarik also had one RBI in the game. Lowe scored two runs in the game, while Gillen, Minarik and Parks each scored once in the game for Asheville. Parks also stole one base in the game. Drew Turner (4-8) took the loss on the bump for the Bulldogs, allowing six runs on six hits through four innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Garrett Crum allowed two runs, one earned through two innings on four hits with one strikeout, before handing the ball off to Landon Gross. The sidewinder fired two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits.
