Bulldogs Open Weekend Series with 8-4 Win over Alabama A&M

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball opened its weekend four-game series with an 8-4 victory over Alabama A&M at Greenwood Field on Friday (Mar. 6).

The teams had minimal traffic on the bases through the first two innings, before Alabama A&M would strike first with one run in the top half of the third. Asheville would respond with four runs in the home half of the third to take a 4-1 lead to the fourth. Patrick Gillen began the inning reaching on a one-out error in the Alabama A&M infield, before later scoring on Blaize Johnson's first career triple that found its way to the right field corner. Johnson would score on a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1, before Jake Minarik and Owen Michelson would draw back-to-back two-out walks to keep the rally alive. Zeb Swangim would single up the middle to score Minarik before advancing to second on the throw. Coleman McGinnis would draw another walk that allowed Michelson to score on a wild pitch to cap off the inning. After the teams traded scoreless frames in the fourth, Alabama A&M would score one again in the top of the fifth before Asheville would respond with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Minarik and Eric Krumpe would put runners on for Swangim, before he was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. After an Alabama A&M pitching change, McGinnis would bring a run home on a sacrifice fly before Chase Klingemann would single through the left side to load the bases yet again. Logan Lowe would reach on a fielder's choice to score Krumpe, before Gillen would single through the right side to score Klingemann. Asheville would add one run in the sixth inning on Minarik's second home run of the season and 11th of his career, a solo shot to left. The teams would trade scoreless frames until the ninth, when Alabama A&M would score twice to ultimately bring the game to its final score.

Gillen also had two hits in the game, while Johnson and Krumpe each had one hit. Minarik scored a career-high three runs in the game, while Gillen, Johnson, Michelson, Krumpe and Klingemann each scored one run in the game. Lowe, Gillen, Johnson, Swangim, Minarik and McGinnis each drove in runs in the game for Asheville. Lowe also stole one base in the game. Lucas Boesen tossed another solid start for the Bulldogs in the game, allowing four hits and two runs through 4.1 innings with six walks and five strikeouts. Branden Barna (1-0) would pick up his first win of the season out of the bullpen, firing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief allowing three hits with three walks and one strikeout. He would then hand the ball off to Ryland Howell, who would finish off the game with 2.1 innings of relief allowing two runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout.
