Baseball Drops Midweek Contest at App State on Tuesday

The Bulldogs came up empty in the top half of the first, before App State struck twice in the home half of the first for a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs answered with six runs in the top of the second powered by a pair of long balls in the inning. Owen Michelson led off the inning with a single through the right side, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Jake Minarik would blast the 1-2 pitch of his at-bat over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season and the 14th of his career to tie the game 2-2. After the first out of the inning, Tyler Parks would get in on the action with a single to center before the second out of the inning was recorded. Jake Pereira would make his return to the lineup with a two-out walk to move Parks to second, before Logan Lowe would turn the card over with a walk to load the bases for Blaize Johnson. Johnson would blast the 1-1 pitch into the visiting bullpen in right for his first career grand slam, seventh home run of the season and 13th home run of his career to put the Bulldogs up 6-2 in the inning. App mounted a rally to tie the game 6-6 in the bottom of the second, with the rally interrupted by a 44-minute weather delay. App State scored two runs in the bottom of the third for an 8-6 lead through three innings, before Asheville scored one run in the fourth when Jake Pereira scored on a wild pitch. App State responded with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth, before the teams traded scoreless frames into the bottom of the eighth. App State walked the game off with one run in the eighth.

Patrick Gillen, Minarik and Parks each had two hits in the game, while Johnson, Michelson and Pereira each had one hit in the game. Pereira scored twice in the game, while Lowe, Johnson, Michelson, Minarik and Parks each scored one run in the game. Johnson drove in four runs in the game, while Minarik also drove in two runs. Gillen also stole one base in the game. Daylinh Nguyen-Brown got the start for the Bulldogs, tossing the first 1.1 innings before passing the ball to Colin Woolard (0-1) who took the loss on the bump. Nick Bruno and Branden Barna finished the game off, with Barna posting a season-high 3.2 innings of relief scattering six hits allowing one unearned run with one walk and one strikeout.
