RICHMOND, Va. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team opened its 2026-27 season on the road against Richmond on Monday, Nov. 2, and despite outscoring the Spiders in the second half, the Bulldogs fell 100-77 inside the Robins Center.

Myles Mayfield paced the Bulldogs with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Khayri Dunn and Kelcy Phipps added 11 points apiece. Daniel Thomas led Asheville on the glass, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Bulldogs struck first with a basket from Kelcy Phipps before Myles Mayfield added a pair of baskets, including a dunk, to give Asheville an early 6-4 advantage. Richmond responded with a pair of three-pointers, but a layup from Khayri Dunn briefly put the Bulldogs back in front, 8-7.

The Spiders answered with a 9-0 run to take a 16-8 lead before a three-pointer from Connor Dubsky cut the deficit to five heading into the first media timeout.

Richmond extended its lead to double digits midway through the opening period, capitalizing on Asheville turnovers and connecting consistently from beyond the arc. The Spiders shot 56.8 percent from the field and knocked down eight three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to carry a 56-27 advantage into halftime.

Asheville found its offensive rhythm coming out of the locker room, shooting 52.6 percent from the field after connecting on just 42.3 percent of its attempts in the opening half. The Bulldogs scored 50 second-half points, connecting on 20 of their 38 field goal attempts while shooting 70 percent from the free throw line.

The Bulldogs also took better care of the basketball in the second half, committing just five turnovers after recording 13 in the opening period. Defensively, Asheville forced nine Richmond turnovers in the final 20 minutes.

Asheville outscored Richmond 50-44 in the second half, but the Spiders' first-half advantage proved too much to overcome.
