ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer was able to grind out a 2-1 win over Radford at Greenwood Field on Saturday (Sept. 27) for three huge points in the Big South Conference.
Â
The teams traded offensive pressures and felt each other out defensively through the first 28 minutes before Asheville would break the ice with a goal in the 29th minute. After an Asheville corner kick was deflected out of the box, Rinta Takagi fed the ball right back in and found the head of Lennart Granzow who stashed it home and put the Bulldogs on the board with his second of the season. The Bulldogs would continue to apply offensive pressure headed toward the break, outshooting the Highlanders 7-1 in the first half while taking their 1-0 lead to the half.
Â
After a weather delay stalled the start of the second half, the teams returned to the pitch and continued to trade chances and runs. Asheville would add an insurance marker in the 74th minute when Aysa Hamid fed a ball toward the far post. The ball found a hard-charging Dylan Kwasnik, who scored his first as a Bulldog and ninth of his career for a 2-0 lead. Radford would get on the board in the 81st minute when a feed from Michael Radomski through the middle would find the feet of Kenshin Akimoto who would score his fifth of the season. The Bulldogs would keep the Highlanders away from their net for the remaining nine minutes to secure the win on their home field.
Â
Asheville outshot Radford 13-7 in the match, including 6-1 in shots on goal. Asheville also edged Radford 5-2 in corner kicks in the contest. Rodrigo Mendes paced the offense with five shots in the contest including three on goal, while Hamid also had three shots in the match. Viðar Ragnarsson, Benian Yao, Takagi, Granzow and Kwasnik each also had one shot in the match. Lucca Barros (5-3-1) picked up the win between the pipes.
