ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After 11 years at the helm of the UNC Asheville baseball program, Scott Friedholm has announced his resignation as head coach.
"We are thankful for all that Coach Friedholm has contributed to UNC Asheville and the baseball program," said Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "Scott dedicated endless hours to working with our student-athletes, improving our facilities, participating in community service, and raising funds to enhance our program. We will miss him and his family and wish them all the best."
Friedholm was appointed head coach of the Bulldogs on June 17, 2014. Over 11 seasons, he has compiled a 195-340-1 record, with his winningest season being in 2023 when the Bulldogs went 26-26. During that season, Asheville had one of the best starts in program history as the Bulldogs won every weekend nonconference series, compiling an 11-1 weekend record entering Big South Conference play. Friedholm coached Robbie Burnett to All-Big South First Team honors that season. The following year, Burnett was named Preseason Player of the Year.
This past season, Asheville had its first-ever Preseason Pitcher of the Year in Colby Guy and its second-ever Pitcher of the Year in Clay Edmondson.
Friedholm is the longest-tenured head coach in program history and the winningest and only coach to earn over 100 career victories. During Friedholm's time at Asheville, the program has integrated the Jeff Fox #6 jersey as an annual tradition to honor the legacy of Bulldog alum Jeff Fox. Friedholm also created one of the most successful fundraising events in the department with "Baseball Night in Asheville." This past year's event raised over $112,000 in support for the baseball program.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to work and coach at UNC Asheville for the last 11 years and 10 seasons. But, I feel it is the right time for a new voice to lead the program moving forward," said Friedholm. "I know AD Cone will do a very thorough search and get the best available person to Asheville and Greenwood Field. I want to thank the current and former players over that period for their effort. Thank you to all the alumni and donors for their continued support. Our family has built amazing relationships in this area and will forever be grateful for our time at UNC Asheville."
During his time with Asheville, Friedholm had 15 individuals earn All-Conference honors, and the program earned three Big South Conference Sportsmanship Awards (2022, 2018, 2015) under Friedholm's leadership.
The welfare of our student-athletes is our top priority during this transition," Cone stated. "Our entire leadership team is dedicated to ensuring that both current and incoming baseball players are fully supported during this time."
