Four Bulldogs Collect College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Honors to Set Program Record

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Four UNC Asheville Women's Tennis players have collected College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® honors, announced by the organization today (Tuesday, May 13). Valeria Centeno, Angelina Joy Hug, Alexis Nyborg and Avery Sager each earned the honor for UNC Asheville, with the four marking the most Academic All-District selections in a single year in program history. This is also the second consecutive year that the Bulldogs have had multiple recipients of the honor.
To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore both athletically and academically, maintain a cumulative 3.5 grade point average and also play in 70 percent of team contests that include team scores.
Centeno went 10-2 in singles play including 3-0 in conference as a junior. She posted one win at No. 4, two at No. 5 and seven wins at No. 6. Centeno also won six doubles matches including one with Alexis Nyborg and five with Elizabeth Tindera. Academically, she holds a 3.70 grade point average with a double major in business and languages and literatures.
This is Centeno's second career Academic All-District honor. She is a native of Hialeah, Fla.
Hug won a team-high 13 matches in singles play including going 3-2 in conference. She went 2-0 at No. 1, went 10-5 at No. 2 and also added one win at No. 3. Hug also earned seven doubles wins on the season at No. 1, earning six of those wins teamed up with Ari Siegel and one teamed up with Elizabeth Tindera She was named Big South Conference Player of the Week three times, as well as being named a First Team All-Conference selection in singles and Second Team All-Conference selection in doubles with Tindera. Academically, she holds a 3.86 grade point average in health and wellness promotion.
This is Hug's first career Academic All-District honor. She is a native of Murten, Switzerland.
Nyborg won seven matches at No. 1 singles including three in conference. She also won three doubles matches on the season, two paired with Elizabeth Tindera and one with Valeria Centeno. She was an All-Conference First Team selection in Singles and also named to the All-Academic Team. Academically, she holds a 3.90 grade point average with a double major in business and mathematics.
This is her first career Academic All-District selection. She is a native of Moreland Hills, Ohio.
Sager posted two wins in singles play on the season, with one at No. 5 and one at No. 6. She was a part of nine doubles wins on the season including going 3-0 in conference with Louise Booker, as the pair had five wins at No. 2 and four at No. 3. Academically, she holds a 3.76 grade point average in political science.
This is Sager's second career Academic All-District honor. She is a native of Waxhaw, N.C.
