Bulldogs Even Series with Friday Win at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball evened its Big South Conference series with a 4-2 win at High Point on Friday (Apr. 18).

Asheville opened the scoring in the first inning when Patrick Gillen scored Corbin Lanowitz on a sacrifice fly to right field, before High Point would tie the game in the third inning. After the teams traded two scoreless innings, Asheville scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to give starter Clay Edmondson some insurance. Rylen Stockton jump-started the offense in the sixth inning with a one-out walk, before Gillen launched his second home run of the season down the right field line to give Asheville a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs would add another run in the top of the seventh when Owen Michelson doubled home Canon Pierce, before High Point attempted a rally in the ninth that was squashed after just one run crossed the plate in the inning.

Asheville out-hit High Point 8-6 in the game, paced by two hits each from Blaize Johnson and Gillen while Logan Lowe, Stockton, Brock Mercado and Michelson each had one hit in the game. Gillen drove in a game-high three runs in the contest, while Michelson also drove in one. Lanowitz, Stockton, Gillen and Pierce each scored one run in the game. Edmondson (5-1) picked up his seventh quality start of the season on the mound, allowing one unearned run over seven innings scattering three hits while firing eight strikeouts. Matthew Hall relieved Edmondson for 0.2 innings, allowing two hits before giving way to Daylinh Nguyen-Brown. Nguyen-Brown fired 1.1 innings of relief allowing one run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout, to earn his sixth save of the season moving into a tie for seventh all-time on the single-season saves list and into a tie for 10th all-time on the career saves list.
