Asheville Prepares for Bulldog Invite

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Track and Field team will host the second annual Bulldog Invite this Friday and Saturday (April 11-12) at the Karl Straus Track on the campus of UNC Asheville.

SEASON RECAP SO FAR / BULLDOGS TO WATCH  

Jan Málek set the pace for the Bulldogs at the 49er Classic (March 21-22), opening the season by dropping the men's 1,500m school record to 3:48.89 to place third overall. 

Also opening strong at the Classic was DaMarr Harvey, who earned a second-place finish in the men's 100m with a time of 10.58, just .25 off his school record. Harvey highlighted the second and final day of the Classic by locking down the men's 200m in a time of 20.88, just .17 off his school record. His efforts earned him his first title of Big South Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, announced March 26. 

In the men's 110m hurdles, Shemarr Session locked a ninth-place finish and time of 15.18 to enter at No. 5 in program records.

Málek doubled back at the Raleigh Relays (March 28) with another school record, this time in the 3,000m steeple. Málek dropped the record by over 8 seconds to set the new time to beat at 8:58.03. 

Málek was joined at the Relays by Adam Hessler, who reset his school record in the men's 10,000m. Hessler knocked 21 seconds off his previous school record to set the new top mark at 29:38.51. Paul Kiprotich joined Hessler in the event, running the second-fastest time in school history at 30:01.04 to enter as the new No. 2.

Nkosi Jeju highlighted the first day of the Tennessee Invite (April 4-5) for Asheville by jumping to a school-record-breaking distance of 7.07 meters in the men's long jump. Jeju also holds the indoor long jump record at 7.34 meters.

Jaelyn Arnold earned a sixth place finish in the women's shot put at the Invite, throwing a personal best of 13.13 meters to enter at No. 2 in program history. Arnold also secured 14th place in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 39.82 meters, just 2.18 meters short of her personal best and No. 5 spot on the All-Time list. 

Session ran his first outdoor 200m, finishing seventh in 21.06 to enter at No. 3 in program records with a new No. 75 DI time. Session also enjoyed success over the hurdles, taking eighth in the 110m hurdles final with his time of 14.75. His preliminary time of 14.55 entered him at No. 4 in program history. 

Nikole Baikova opened her outdoor season by placing seventh in the women's 800m with 2:15.23. 

Christina Jones set a new season's best in the javelin throw, placing seventh overall with her distance of 31.12 meters. Jones currently holds No. 5 spot on the All-Time list at 37.05 meters. 

SENIOR DAY

Asheville will recognize its senior class at 1 pm on Saturday during the meet.

FOOD VENDORS

There will be several food options for fans to enjoy over the weekend. Moe's Southwest Grill and White Rabbit Food truck will be in attendance on Friday and Saturday. Pelican's Snoballs will be in attendance Friday evening, and The Hop and Chick-fil-A will be in attendance on Saturday only.
