Honoring the Legacy of Jeff Fox: The No. 6

03.13.2025 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - For the past several years, it has been a tradition within the UNC Asheville Baseball program to pass along the No. 6 jersey in honor of late alum Jeff Fox.

Back in January at the annual Baseball Night celebration, the number was handed down again. For the 2025 season, it belongs to senior Corbin Lanowitz. Lanowitz is a utility player from Kernersville, N.C. who found his home at UNC Asheville after transferring from Boston College.

The No. 6 jersey was worn by Jeff Fox, a former standout Bulldog baseball player who served as a Secret Service member and was charged with protecting American Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush during an eight-year stint at the White House. Fox passed away on March 16, 2021, from the COVID-19 disease. Each year, head coach Scott Friedholm awards the No. 6 to the student-athlete who best exemplifies Jeff's core values - loyalty, determination and dedication.

"Typically, it is a difficult decision to decide who gets the honor to wear the number six each year," said Friedholm. "But after the leadership Corbin showed in Greensboro, while we were there for 18 days after Hurricane Helene, and the remaining two weeks when we got back home to finish our fall season…the decision was easy.  Corbin kept us together during that time and got 39 players to believe that coming back to Asheville was the right decision for the program.  He has continued his growth, both on and off the field, over the last four years and it has been fun to watch as his coach."

In his Bulldog career, Lanowitz has appeared in 144 games making 138 starts. He has slashed .277/.367/.342 with 19 doubles and five home runs, scoring 84 runs and driving in 81 along with 11 stolen bases. During his career, Lanowitz has found spots in the lineup at designated hitter, outfield, second base and third base.

"Wearing number 6 this year is the greatest honor," said Lanowitz. "Being able to honor Jeff Fox and everything that he stood for is amazing, and I am humbled to know that my coaches and teammates view me as somebody who embodies the characteristics of loyalty, dedication, and determination."

The baseball program will be breaking ground on the Jeff Fox Hitting Facility in May toward the end of the 2025 season.

The Bulldogs also open Big South Conference play this weekend (Mar. 14-16) at Gardner-Webb. Live stats for all three games are available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
