UNC Asheville Baseball Breaks Fundraising Record at Annual Baseball Night
01.23.2025 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - For the eighth consecutive year, UNC Asheville baseball held its annual Baseball Night last Friday (Jan. 17) to celebrate and raise money for the program. In total, the evening set a fundraising record for the event and raised over $112,000 for the baseball program. The special event was sponsored by Highland Brewing and Twisted Laurel Restaurant Group, with special thanks from the Atlanta Braves.
All proceeds from the event go towards the 2025 season with expenses affiliated with the upcoming season to support the student-athlete athletic experience while they compete on the field and in the classroom. The evening also saw the second-highest ticket total sold for the event (241). 42 of the live auction's 58 items were provided by individuals and businesses outside the greater Asheville area.
"I don't think I can say thank enough to the attendees, our sponsors Highland Brewing and Twisted Laurel, our parents, Trevor and Jamie Kelley, Doug Maurer, David Jandrew and everyone involved with putting this event on," said head coach Scott Friedholm. "I don't have the words to express it, but luckily James Earl Jones did in Field of Dreams when he said, "The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. Baseball reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Ohhhhhhhh, people will come! People will most definitely come!"
In addition to being the program's biggest fundraiser, the event served as the opportunity to pass down the coveted No. 6 jersey to senior utility player Corbin Lanowitz in honor of late alum Jeff Fox. The No. 6 jersey was worn by Jeff Fox, a former standout Bulldog baseball player who served as a Secret Service member and was charged with protecting American Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush during an eight-year stint at the White House. Fox passed away on March 16, 2021, from the COVID-19 disease. Fox's character and athletic talent left a lasting impression on those who knew him. In honor of Jeff's memory, his No. 6 jersey is assigned each year to a player who exemplifies Jeff's values–dedication, determination and loyalty.
The baseball program will be breaking ground on the Jeff Fox Hitting Facility in the coming months.
"It was a great night celebrating our Bulldog baseball program," said Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "A special thank you to Coach Friedholm and Anna Catherine Pritchard for their work in making the night special for our student-athletes and those in attendance."
