Baseball Battles, but Falls at Wofford in Non-Conference Action

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball battled, but fell at Wofford 9-5 in non-conference action on Tuesday (Feb. 25).

After Wofford opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first, Asheville responded with three runs in the top half of the second to tie the game. With one out in the second, Caiden Chilausky reached first after striking out and beating out a wild pitch, before Coleman McGinnis pushed him to second with a bunt single to first base. Johnny Brucato would keep things going with a single to second base, initially loading the bases before Chilausky scored on a throwing error on the play. Jake Pereira laid down a bunt single to third base to load the bases, before the second out was recorded. Corbin Lanowitz stepped to the plate and tied the game with one swing with a single up the middle to score McGinnis and Brucato. Wofford would respond with four runs in the bottom of the third. Asheville would get one run back in the fifth when Owen Michelson doubled home Rylen Stockton, before the teams would trade scoreless frames until Wofford scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Asheville's final run would come in the top of the eighth when Logan Lowe doubled home McGinnis.

Five Bulldogs recorded two hits apiece in Lowe, Lanowitz, Michelson, McGinnis and Pereira while Brucato also had one hit in the game. Lanowitz drove in two runs in the game, while Lowe and Michelson each brought in one. McGinnis scored twice in the game, while Stockton, Chilausky and Brucato each scored one run. Matthew Hall made his first career start as a Bulldog, allowing three runs on three hits. John Whiteside tossed one inning of relief, allowing two earned runs on one hit with three walks and one strikeout. Shea Walker provided one inning of relief allowing two runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts, while Garrett Crum fired a scoreless outing of 2.2 innings scattering two hits and two walks along with three punchouts. Sam Thompson tossed 0.1 innings, and was relieved by an appearance from Chase Buscher before Ryland Howell tossed the last two scoreless innings allowing three hits while striking out three.
