Lead Slips Away as Baseball Falls at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball saw a late lead slip away in a 4-3 loss at UNC Wilmington on Saturday (Feb. 22).

The game stayed scoreless through three innings thanks to some solid work from both starting pitchers, before Asheville struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth. Corbin Lanowitz began the inning with a leadoff walk before being bunted to second by Rylen Stockton. A ball off the bat of Ben Hemphill put Lanowitz in motion before he scored the game's first run on a throwing error by the UNCW shortstop as Hemphill moved to second. After the first out, Owen Michelson would rip a one-out single through the left side to score Hemphill. UNCW would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, before Asheville would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Asheville would score the run with two outs after Hemphill drew a walk and stole second, followed by a walk to Patrick Gillen. Michelson would drive in another run with a double to left center to score Hemphill, putting Asheville up 3-1. UNCW would strike for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead before holding on to the victory in the ninth.

Michelson led the offense with two hits in the game, while Stockton and Gillen also had hits in the game for Asheville. Hemphill scored twice in the game, while Lanowitz also crossed the plate once. Michelson also drove in a pair of runs for Asheville in the game. Clay Edmonson fired five innings getting the start for Asheville, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Nick Bruno would fire 2.2 innings of hitless relief, allowing two earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts while John Whiteside tossed 0.1 innings allowing one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
