Bulldogs Blank Winthrop for Key Big South Conference Victory

ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer blanked Winthrop 2-0 on the road for a key Big South Conference victory on Saturday (Oct. 4). This marked the third straight shutout for Asheville against Winthrop dating back to 2022.

The teams played a back and forth scoreless first half that saw Asheville outshoot Winthrop 8-5 with no corner kicks for either side.

Asheville would finally break through with a goal in the 55th minute, an unassisted marker from Kendall Powell for her first of the season and the first of her Bulldog career for her first game-winner. Asheville would revive its offensive pressure about 10 minutes later, when Akari Kishida scored her fourth of the season to put Asheville ahead 2-0 in the 67th minute. Winthrop edged Asheville 8-5 in shots in the second half, but Asheville was able to hang on for its fifth shutout of the season. Asheville has now posted five shutouts in a season for the second time in the past three seasons.

Each team posted 13 shots in the match, with Asheville edging Winthrop in shots on goal 6-5. Georgia Duke and Powell each led the way with three shots in the match, with Powell matching her career-high. Kishida and Abby Foulk each had two shots in the match, while Lilly Graumann, Lili Adams and Karlee Benz each had one shot in the contest. Gracie Murray (3-5-2) made six saves for her third shutout of the season and the ninth of her career.
