Men's Soccer Drops Tight Contest to No. 8 Furman on Tuesday

10.21.2025 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer dropped a tight 2-1 contest to No. 8 Furman on Tuesday (Oct. 21) at Greenwood Field. This was Asheville's second time this season hosting a nationally-ranked squad in Asheville.

The teams traded runs in each others' halves throughout the first 20 minutes, before Asheville was able to settle down and control possession. After a Furman chance in the Asheville end, the ball was played out to Rodrigo Mendes who embarked on a full-field sprint deep into the Furman end. Mendes then dumped the ball off to Louis Beckett, who tucked his third goal of the season and fifth of his Bulldog career in the top right corner to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.

Furman responded to take the lead for good six five minutes later with two goals in a four-minute span. Ryan Wagner scored his first of the season off an assist from Connor Stout in the 30th minute, before Wilfer Bustamante scored his sixth of the season off an assist from Diego Hernandez in the 33rd minute. In total in the half, Furman out-shot Asheville 8-5 while Asheville had three corner kicks to Furman's two.

The offensive pace and intensity picked up in the second half, but no goals were scored. Furman out-shot Asheville 7-6 in the period, while earning five corner kicks to none for Asheville.

Furman edged Asheville 15-11 in shots for the match, including 6-5 in shots on goal. Rinta Takagi paced Asheville with three shots in the contest, while Beckett, Joseph Ling and Aysa Hamid each registered two shots in the match. Sam Howe and Dylan Culbertson each had one shot in the match, with Howe's being the first of his career. Lucca Barros (6-5-2) made three saves in the contest.

The Bulldogs (6-5-2) return to action on Saturday (Oct. 25) at Winthrop in Big South Conference action. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Rock Hill, S.C. with live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
