Bulldogs Down Winthrop for Key Conference Victory

ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer took down Winthrop Saturday night (Oct. 25) by a score of 2-0 for a key Big South Conference victory.

The Bulldogs applied pressure early, scoring the match's first goal in the 11th minute. Viðar Ragnarsson fed a ball into the box that found the head of Rodrigo Mendes who scored his fifth of the season just inside the near post. Asheville would go on to out-shoot Winthrop 5-2 in the opening frame and earn two corners while holding Winthrop without one as they took their 1-0 lead to the break.

The Bulldogs struck quick again in the second half, when Lennart Granzow scored his second goal of the season in the 49th minute for a 2-0 lead. A corner was played in by Rinta Takagi, before Ragnarsson got a head on it to advance the play and Granzow used his head to tuck it in on the far post. The assist was the second of the night for Ragnarsson and the second of the season for Takagi. The Bulldogs were able to keep the Eagles out of the net for their fourth shutout of the season.

Asheville had eight shots in the match to Winthrop's 10 and five shots on goal to Winthrop's one. Asheville also edged Winthrop 5-3 in corner kicks in the contest. Mendes and Aysa Hamid each paced the Bulldog offense with three shots in the contest, while Ragnarsson and Granzow each had one. Lucca Barros (7-5-2) made one save for his fourth career shutout.
