ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Major League pitcher Trevor Kelley has been announced as the keynote speaker for UNC Asheville's annual Baseball Night to be held next Friday (Jan. 17) at Highland Brewing at 6:00 p.m.
Kelley was drafted in the 36th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox out of the University of North Carolina. In 2022, Major League Baseball's Collective Bargaining Agreement shortened the draft to 20 rounds, meaning that Kelley's draft status no longer exists in Major League Baseball. After four years in the minor leagues floating anywhere and everywhere between rookie ball and AAA, Kelley went on to make his big league debut with the team that drafted him, the Red Sox, on July 2, 2019 in Fenway Park against the Toronto Blue Jays. In his career, he has played for the Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays.
"We are very excited to have Trevor and his wife, Jamie, joining us in Asheville for the weekend," said head baseball coach Scott Friedholm. " We're looking forward to hearing his story of a 36th-rounder, which doesn't exist anymore in the MLB draft, to making it to the Big Leagues four years later. I also want our guys to hear how he juggled academics and athletics at the highest level during his collegiate career."
