Bulldogs Edge Jacksonville State in Comeback Fashion Thursday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer edged Jacksonville State 2-1 in comeback fashion Thursday night (Aug. 29) at Greenwood Field. It was the first time since a 3-2 overtime win at Wofford on Aug. 20, 2017 that the Bulldogs had rallied to overcome a halftime deficit and come away victorious.

Jacksonville State struck first with a goal in the ninth minute off of a free kick set piece, ultimately taking the 1-0 lead to the break with Asheville firing three shots in the period forcing one save from the Gamecocks keeper.

The teams would trade opportunities throughout the early stages of the second half, before a transition play on the far side found the feet of Reina Herndon. The freshman played it down the far wing to a streaking Karlee Benz, who touched it into the back of the net with the right foot to tie the match in the 63rd minute. The goal was the second of Benz's Bulldog career, while the assist was the first of Herndon's career. The teams stayed deadlocked for about the next 10 minutes, before the Bulldogs were able to create another transition run down the far side. Addie Cooper connected a pass to Mercedes McNabb, who crossed the ball into the box to a crashing Ava Bjorkman-Tracy. Bjorkman-Tracy stashed home her first career goal as the game-winer, with McNabb tallying her first career assist on the play. The Bulldogs were able to play solid defense throughout the remainder of the contest, coming away with the big home win.

Asheville was edged 9-8 in shots in the match, with the Bulldogs putting six shots on target to Jacksonville State's two. Asheville also outworked the Gamecocks 6-4 for corner kicks in the contest. Cooper led the way with three shots putting two on target, while Akari Kishida, Manuela Scheier, Bjorkman-Tracy and Benz each also had shots in the match. Alison Little (1-0-0) picked up her first career win between the pipes, making her first career start with her first career save.
