Women's Soccer Battles to Hard-Fought Draw with VMI

09.01.2024 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw with VMI at Greenwood Field on Sunday (Sept. 1).

VMI struck first 16 minutes into the match for a 1-0 lead, but the Bulldogs would turn up the offensive pressure in the scoring end. A well-connected series of passes set the Bulldogs up in the offensive end, as a pass found the foot of Ava Bjorkman-Tracy who fed out wide to Azalea Mihailovich. Mihailovich crossed it into the box to find Daysha Chaney, who tied the match with her first goal of the season and the eighth of her career. Mihailovich picked up her first assist of the season and eighth of her career on the goal, while Bjorkman-Tracy's assist was the first of the season and the first of her career. The teams battled through the remainder of a physical first half, heading to the break tied 1-1. Asheville outshot VMI 11-3 in the period, along with earning two corner kicks to VMI's none in the half.

The teams traded chances in the second half before the final horn sounded, as Asheville was relentless in the second half creating chances in the offensive end.

Asheville outworked VMI for nine corner kicks in the second half to bring their total to 11 for the match, marking the first time since Oct. 8, 2023 (12) that the Bulldogs registered double-digit corner kicks in a match. Asheville totaled 20 shots in the match, putting 10 on target. 20 marks the highest shot total since Oct. 8, 2023 at South Carolina State (34). Bjorkman-Tracy led the Bulldogs with a career-high six shots in the match, while Manuela Schreier also registered a career-high three. Anna Doane, Mercedes McNabb and Chaney each had two shots in the match. Addie Cooper, Julia Hüsch, Karlee Benz, Nao Kawasaki and Reina Herndon each had eon shot in the contest. Gracie Murray (0-2-1) made two saves between the pipes for Asheville.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday (Sept. 5) at Furman in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Greenville, S.C. with live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
