Kaufman Records 200th Career Hit as Baseball Drops Midweek Game at East Tennessee State

05.08.2024 | Baseball

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Senior Ty Kaufman became the latest Bulldog to record 200 career hits Wednesday night (May 8), as UNC Asheville dropped its midweek contest at East Tennessee State by a score of 6-2.

Kaufman laced the second pitch of the game back up the middle to notch his career milestone, before the game would end up scoreless through four innings. Bulldog pitching was able to strand several runners, while Asheville just couldn't quite get something going offensively. ETSU would scratch across three runs in the bottom of the fifth to break the ice, before Kaufman doubled home Canon Pierce to get the Bulldogs on the board in the top of the sixth. After ETSU scored three runs in the home half of the sixth, Asheville would score one run in the top of the seventh to bring the game to its final score, when a Ben Hemphill sacrifice fly brought home Dylan Bacot.

Kaufman paced the offense going 3-4 on the night, while Corbin Lanowitz, Bacot, Pierce and Sam Gallardo each had one hit in the game. Bacot and Pierce scored runs on the night, while Kaufman and Hemphill drove in Asheville's runs. Bryce Fisher got the start on the bump for Asheville, allowing one hit and two walks with one strikeout through two innings of work. He was relieved by Nic Melton, who tossed one scoreless inning allowing one hit with one strikeout. Jacob Strmiska fired one hitless inning with two punchouts, while Shea Walker (0-2) took the loss for Asheville allowing three runs, two earned on two hits with one walk in 0.1 innings. Isaac Gonzales and Jacob Williams each followed with 0.1 innings of work, while Justin Needles contributed 0.2 innings and Sam Thompson also tossed 0.1 innings. Justin Honeycutt and Cole Schiff each tossed one hitless inning in the game, with Honeycutt striking out one and Schiff getting two strikeouts.

The Bulldogs return to the diamond on Friday (May 10) to host Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
