ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A total team effort carried UNC Asheville Baseball past High Point 6-4 in the Big South Conference series opener on Friday (Apr. 5) at Greenwood Field.
Starter Nick Bruno worked a three up, three down top half of the first, before Asheville would strike with back-to-back home runs in the home half to take a 2-0 lead in the first. Ty Kaufman's first career home run stayed in the yard, creating an adventure for High Point's right fielder. Kaufman initially stopped at third on the play, before beating the ball home to put the Bulldogs on the board. Burnett would follow with a long ball that would leave the yard for his 11th home run of the season as the Bulldogs went ahead 2-0. High Point would rally with one run in the third and one run in the fourth to tie the game, as the teams headed to the fifth and then the sixth still tied 2-2. Asheville would tack on two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to help secure the victory. After Ben Hemphill reached on a two-out High Point error in the sixth, he would later score when a misplay off the bat of Brock Mercado was kicked into no-mans land down the right field line. Mercado would later come home as an unearned run on a single to left center by Kohl Abrams. Asheville used a hit parade to tack on two more runs in the seventh, with three straight singles to the right side to start the inning from Dylan Bacot, Corbin Lanowitz and Cameron Johnson. Bacot scored on the hit by Johnson, before Lanowitz would come home on sacrifice fly to right center by Michael Groves. High Point would scratch two across in the ninth, before Bulldog pitching would ultimately extinguish the threat.
Kaufman led the way offensively with a game-high three hits, while Johnson had two hits and Burnett, Bacot, Lanowitz, Groves, Hemphill and Abrams each had one hit in the game. Kaufman, Burnett, Johnson, Groves and Abrams each drove in one run in the game, while Kaufman, Burnett, Bacot, Lanowitz, Hemphill and Mercado each scored in the game. Bruno delivered a solid start on the bump for the Bulldogs, going four innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one. Brett Johnson (1-2) delivered his best relief appearance of the season, picking up the win with 4.2 innings while scattering two runs and four hits, while walking one and punching out four. Justin Needles picked up his first save of the season getting the final out for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs return to the diamond tomorrow (Saturday, Apr. 6) to host High Point for the middle game of the series. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
