Bruno's Career Night Not Enough as Baseball Drops Series Opener at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Nick Bruno's career start wasn't enough for UNC Asheville Baseball Friday night (Apr. 26) in Farmville, as Asheville dropped the Big South Conference series opener by a score of 4-1.
Longwood opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left off the bat of Noah Campanelli, before the teams would trade scoreless frames headed to the top of the fourth. The inning began with back-to-back walks to Corbin Lanowitz and Dylan Bacot, before Michael Groves advanced both runners with a groundout to second. Canon Pierce would drive in what would end up Asheville's only run of the night on a groundout to second, as Lanowitz scored on the play. Great pitching on both sides sent the game into the bottom of the eighth tied 1-1, before Longwood would scratch across three runs in the frame to bring the game to its final score.
Asheville totaled five hits in the game, with the top four hitters in the order each recording hits in Ty Kaufman, Robbie Burnett, Johnson and Lanowitz, while Pierce also registered one hit in the game and Lanowitz scoring the only run of the game for Asheville. Asheville was paced in the game by a career start from Bruno, who logged career-highs in both innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (10) while allowing just one run on four hits with two walks. Brett Johnson (3-3) got hung with the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts through two innings of relief.
