Asheville Women's Tennis Racks up Big South Conference Major Awards, All-Conference Honors

FULL BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Tennis racked up Big South Conference major awards as well as All-Conference honors, announced by the league today (Thursday, Apr. 18).
Linge Steenkamp earned Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles along with partner Ari Siegel, while Angelina Joy Hug and Rosie Dickson earned First Team All-Conference in doubles play. Alexis Nyborg earned Freshman of the Year honors as well as Second Team All-Conference honors in singles play, along with Louise Booker and Hug on the All-Conference Second Team for singles play. Dickson was also named to the All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year, while Lise Gregory was also named Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
Steenkamp led Asheville to a second consecutive Regular Season Championship, going 13-4 overall at No. 1 singles and a perfect 5-0 in conference, while going 11-2 at No. 1 doubles with Ari Siegel including 2-0 in conference. She was a three-time Big South Conference Player of the Week selection this season. This is the first time a Big South Conference school has had back-to-back Player of the Year selections since Lauren Proctor of Winthrop won the award four years in a row (2016-2019). This is the second time in program history that UNC Asheville has posted back-to-back Player of the Year selections, and the first since Jenee Cross won the award three consecutive years (1988-90). Steenkamp becomes the fifth Player of the Year selection in program history.Â
This marks Steenkamp's fifth and sixth career All-Conference honors. The Bloemfontein, South Africa native is a health and wellness promotion major. This is also Siegel's third career All-Conference honor. The Bradenton, Fla. native is an environmental science major.
Nyborg has gone 14-3 at No. 3 singles including 4-1 in conference, with three Big South Conference Freshman of the Week selections this season. This is the first time a Big South Conference school has had back-to-back Freshman of the Year selections since Winthrop's Lauren Proctor (2016) and Alissa Soloveva (2017). Nyborg becomes the third Freshman of the Year selection in program history.
This marks Nyborg's first career All-Conference selection. The Moreland Hills, Ohio native is a double major in computer science and math.
Gregory led Asheville to its second consecutive Big South Conference Regular Season Championship, with back-to-back undefeated regular seasons in conference play. This is the first time a Big South Conference school has had back-to-back Coach of the Year selections since Anca Dumitrescu of Charleston Southern (2021-2022). This is Gregory's third career Coach of the Year selection, and the sixth in program history. It is the second time in program history that UNC Asheville has posted back-to-back Coach of the Year selections, and the first since Karl Johnston (1988-89). Â
Hug and Dickson posted a 10-1 mark in doubles play including a perfect 5-0 mark in league play at No. 2. Hug also posted an 11-3 mark in singles play including three wins in conference and nine wins at No. 4. She also was the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week twice this season
The honors mark the first two All-Conference honors of Hug's career. She is a native of Murten, Switzerland.
Along with her Second Team All-Conference doubles selection, Dickson lands on the All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year posting a 3.32 grade point average in biology with a minor in environmental science.
This marks Dickson's seventh All-Conference selection including her second career All-Academic Team selection. She is a native of Bradenton, Fla.
Booker also notched nine wins at No. 2 singles, including two wins in conference play. She was also a two-time Freshman of the Week selection this season.
This is Booker's first career All-Conference selection. She is a native of Lowestoft, Suffolk, U.K.Â
