Asheville Turns in Successful Day at Home Meet

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track & field team triumphed at their first home meet in 24 years, bringing home an outstanding 12 event wins and 28 top-three finishes to round out a successful day at the Karl Straus Track this Saturday.Â
TRACK EVENTS
The Bulldogs used the home crowd to their advantage to dominate across a range of distances on the track. Asheville opened with a strong effort in the 5000-meter run, with Madeline Wittschen coming in second with 8:21.03. She was joined by Hanna Guyton, who ran 20:35.25 to finish in 13th. For the men, the Bulldogs were led by Yates Hockaday, who secured a third-place finish with 15:47.63. Following Hockaday were Dylan Major (fifth—16:10.36) and Jonas Roach (16:17.83).Â
Next on the track was the women's 1500m, which was won by Alison Graf, who kicked hard to finish in 4:47.66. Ella Moore finished sixth (4:58.83), and Sophie Lundin finished seventh (5:00.10).Â
On the men's side, Jan Málek finished close in second with 3:51.48, a personal best and the second-fastest mark in program history. Hot on his heels was Alex Haines, who rounded out the top three at 3:53.07. Also in the event were Tyler Niloff, who secured a heat win and 12th overall (4:08.67), Brock Newsome (14th, 4:09.15), and Lance Surles, who also locked down a heat win and 16th overall (4:11.56).Â
Asheville also looked strong over the hurdles, with Mallory Haney taking second place in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.41). Also in the event were Maya Dulaney (12th, 15.87) and Lee Kania (16th, 16.80). For the men, Adam Graham represented Asheville with his 7th-place finish in 16.11. Taking the distance up to 400m, Lee Kania secured a sixth-place finish, with Murielle Jeanite taking eighth in 1:14.31. On the men's side, Adam Graham finished in seventh with 1:06.54.Â
Jalen Anderson locked down the men's 100-meter event with a time of 10.39, the second fastest mark in program history behind his personal best of 10.35 in 2022. He was joined by DaMarr Harvey, who ran a time of 10.47 to finish in fourth place. For the women, Elyse Myles ran 12.54 to finish in sixth. In the men's 400-meter event, Anthony Mason led the bulldogs to finish in fifth with 50.14. Isaac Wright finished in seventh with 50.34.
The Bulldogs topped both sections of the 800-meter event, with Jaheem O'Hara winning the men's section (1:56.45) and Isabel Richardson winning the women's section (2:15.57). O'Hara was followed by a stacked Asheville field of Brock Newsome (2nd, 1:56.97), Brandon Kalasnik (7th, 1:57.74), Preston Core (10th, 1:58.69), Tom Germann (14th, 2:00.22), John Ramirez (15th, 2:01.34), Tyler Niloff (20th, 2:03.54) and Dylan Major (32nd 2:11.69). The women's event also featured Zoe Bos (4th, 2:21.38), Amanda Orban (7th - 2:24.49) and Maddie Hamuka (9th, 2:26.96, PR).
In the 200-meter event, DaMarr Harvey secured a second-place finish with 21.16. His training partner Jalen Anderson crossed the line in fifth with 21.52, Zac Weas finished in 7th (21.92), and Braelin June finished in 11th (22.49). On the women's side, third place was clinched by Mallory Haney (24.68), with Francesca Cergol taking seventh (25.56) and Elyse Myles right behind with 25.57 (eighth). Chaniya Owens finished in 11th (25.96), and Murielle finished in 24th (27.31). Â
In the women's steeplechase, Emma Kennett led from the gun to finish in first place with 11:45.80. Teammate Alyx Beausoleil finished in third place with 12:57.23.Â
FIELD EVENTS
The field events started on Friday, with the women's and men's hammer throw. Madison Hannah finished in 12th with a distance of 36.76 meters. Just behind her was Jaelyn Arnold with 36.63 meters). Raina Jackson finished in 23rd (27.40m), Renae Younce finished in 24th (26,74m), and Christina Jones finished in 25th (26.04m).Â
Brianna Moore secured a win in the women's javelin throw with 40.72 meters. Christina Jones finished in 8th (29.49m) and Lee Kania (27.75m). Moore also topped the charts in the women's long jump with her distance of 6.11 meters. Murielle came in 17th (5.05m) and Maya Dulaney came in 25th (4.60m). For the men, Mason jumped a distance of 5.66 meters to finish in 12th, and Eli Oescgher finished in 14th with his jump of 5.61 meters. Adam Graham finished in 8th in the men's javelin with his throw of 33.52 meters.Â
Mallory Haney finished in third place in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters. Lee Kania finished in joint 7th with 1.45 meters. Gabriel Matthews finished in 9th with 1.75 meters. Haney claimed an event win in the women's triple jump with her distance of 12.27m. Chaniya Owens jumped to second place with 11.76 meters. Gabriel Matthews took third place in the men's triple jump with 13.59 meters. Daphne Bogert finished in third place in the women's pole vault with 2.70 meters.Â
Raina Jackson dominated the women's shot put with her winning distance of 13.83 meters. Also in the event were Younce (11th, 9.96m), Jaelyn Arnold (16th, 9.77m), and Maya Dulaney (18th, 9.39m). In the women's discus, Madison Hannah finished in 7th (38.87m), Jaelyn Arnold finished in 10th (35.31m), and Younce finished in 22nd (19.96m).Â
In the men's pole vault, third-place was secured by Eli Oescgher with 3.70 meters. In the men's shot, Oescgher finished in 15th with 8.30 meters.Â
RELAY EVENTSÂ
It was an Asheville takeover in the relay events. The men's 4 x 100m secured a win with a time of 40.82. The team was DaMarr Harvey, Jalen Anderson, Zac Weas, and Braelin June. The women's team of Elyse Myles, Francesca Cergol, Brianna Moore and Chaniya Owens finished in third place with 48.10.Â
In the 4 x 400-meter relay, both men's and women's A teams cruised to first-place finishes. The men finished at 3:23.78, and the women finished at 3:54.56. The men's B and C teams ran 3:29.56 (3rd) and 3:33.33 (4th), respectively, and the women's B team finished 3rd with 4:12.43.Â
