Bulldogs Open Weekend Series with Victory at Radford

RADFORD, Va. -Â UNC Asheville Baseball opened its Big South Conference weekend series with a 5-4 victory at Radford on Friday (Apr. 12).
The Bulldogs jumped on Radford in the top half of the first inning, when Ty Kaufman led off the game with a single before stealing both second and third base before ultimately scoring on a wild pitch to put Asheville up 1-0. Corbin Lanowitz would later double the lead with a solo shot to right field, his third of the season. Lanowitz picked up his second RBI of the game in the top of the fourth, when he singled home Cameron Johnson to push Asheville's lead to 3-0. Radford would scrape across one run in the fifth, before Brett Johnson would come on in relief of Nick Bruno to extinguish the threat with a strikeout. Asheville would add two more runs in the sixth, loading the bases to start the inning with a Lanowitz walk, a single to left from Dylan Bacot and a walk from Michael Groves. Ben Hemphill would bring in one run on a ground out, before Brock Mercado would drop a single into right center to bring home the second run of the inning. Radford would try to rally with a run in the seventh and two runs in the ninth, before Johnson would slam the door shut on the win.
Lanowitz and Groves each had two hits in the game, while Kaufman, Johnson, Bacot, Pierce and Mercado each had one hit. Lanowitz drove home two runs, while Mercado also had one RBI in the win. Lanowitz also scored twice in the game, while Kaufman, Johnson and Bacot also scored. Johnson (2-2) picked up the win in relief, scattering three runs on four hits through 4.1 innings while walking two and striking out four. Bruno fired 4.2 innings in his fifth start of the season, allowing one run on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
