Bulldogs Sweep Doubleheader with Niagara on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Baseball swept its doubleheader with Niagara on Saturday (Mar. 9), walking off game one 9-7 in 10 innings before taking game two 15-9.
Game One
Niagara started the scoring in the top half of the first with two runs, before Asheville countered with two runs in the home half to even the score. Cameron Johnson knocked a triple to right field aided by a slip by the Niagara right fielder to score Dylan Bacot and Corbin Lanowitz. The teams traded blank frames in the second and third, before Niagara would build a 7-2 lead with one run in the fourth, two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. Asheville would begin to chip away in the home half of the seventh when Bacot singled home Canon Pierce, before a Brock Mercado sacrifice fly would bring home Johnson to add another in the eighth. Asheville mounted a rally in the ninth to tie the game and ultimately force extra innings. Bacot led off the inning reaching on a fielding error, before Lanowitz drew a walk. Johnson then launched a game-tying three-run tank to the left field corner to bring the Bulldogs back to life. Justin Needles was able to strand a Niagara runner at third in the top of the 10th, giving the Bulldogs a chance in the home half. After Robbie Burnett led off the frame with a four-pitch walk, Bacot called game launching his second home run of the year to left and walking it off 9-7.
Bacot, Johnson and Pierce each had two hits in the game, while Kaufman also had one. Johnson drove in five of Asheville's runs, while Bacot had three RBI and Mercado also had one. Bacot himself scored three runs, while Lanowitz and Johnson each scored twice and Burnett and Pierce each scored once. Needles (2-0) picked up the win in relief, firing 4.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on two hits while allowing two walks with six strikeouts. Cole Schiff got the start on the mound for Asheville, allowing five runs on six hits through 5.1 innings with three walks and four strikeouts.
Game Two

A bases-loaded walk to Kaufman brought home Lanowitz, before a sacrifice fly from Pierce scored Michael Groves. Abrams scored Kaufman with a double down the left field line in his second at-bat of the inning, before a Burnett ground out scored Coleman McGinnis. Niagara got one back in the second on a solo home run from Tommy Takayoshi, before Asheville got one back when Kaufman came home on a passed ball in the home half of the inning. The teams traded blank frames until the fifth, when Niagara got one in their half of the inning before Asheville scored three in the home half.
