Lead Slips Away as Baseball Falls to Charleston Southern

Asheville scored a run in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 3-1 lead, with the Bulldogs starting the scoring with Ty Kaufman scoring on a Cameron Johnson sacrifice fly to left. After Charleston Southern briefly tied the game in the top of the second, Asheville regained the lead in the home half with Ben Hemphill grounding into a double play to score Kohl Abrams. Asheville extended its lead to 3-1 in the third when Dylan Bacot sent his first triple of the season to the left center gap, later scoring on a Corbin Lanowitz groundout. The teams traded scoreless frames for the next four innings, with Asheville taking a 3-1 lead to the eighth. A pinch-hit home run from Cade Conway got the Buccaneers back within one, before Asheville added an insurance run with an opposite field solo shot from Brock Mercado for his first career home run. Asheville would take a 4-2 lead to the ninth, before Charleston Southern would put up five runs in the ninth to complete the comeback.
Every Asheville starter posted at least one hit in the game for the second time this season, led by two hits apiece from Bacot, Johnson, Mercado and Hemphill. Kaufman, Robbie Burnett, Lanowitz, Michael Groves and Kohl Abrams each had one hit in the game for Asheville. Lanowitz, Johnson and Mercado each drove in runs in the game for the Bulldogs, while Kaufman, Bacot, Abrams and Mercado each scored once in the game. Cole Schiff logged one of his best starts of the season on the mound, allowing one run and scattering five hits through six innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Justin Needles was solid in relief, allowing one run on two hits through two innings. Strmiska took the loss for the Bulldogs despite getting the first two outs in the ninth, while Nic Melton came on to finish the top of the ninth. Bulldog pitching also benefited from four double plays turned on the infield. Â
