Baseball Drops Conference Opener to Charleston Southern on Friday

The Bulldogs were able to strike first in the bottom of the first when Cameron Johnson beat out a double play ball on the infield to reach base and allow Robbie Burnett to score as Asheville took a 1-0 lead. The teams traded scoreless frames until the fourth, when Charleston Southern would score seven runs to take the lead. Each team scored twice in the fifth, with Asheville's two runs coming in on a Dylan Bacot two-out single to right center that scored Burnett and Ben Hemphill. Charleston Southern would pull away with six runs in the sixth, before Asheville would counter with one run in the seventh and three in the eighth. Burnett launched a solo shot over the right field wall before Michael Groves doubled home Johnson and Corbin Lanowitz in the eighth. He would later score on a single up the middle by Ty Kaufman. Charleston Southern plated two in the ninth to bring the game to its final score.
Burnett, Bacot and Kaufman each had two hits in the game, while Lanowitz, Johnson and Groves each had one hit in the game. Bacot and Groves each drove in two runs, while Burnett, Johnson and Kaufman each drove in one run. Burnett scored three times in the game, while Lanowitz, Johnson, Groves and Hemphill each scored once. Nick Bruno took the loss on the bump, allowing two earned runs on three hits through three innings. Bryce Fisher, Brett Johnson and Sam Thompson each made relief appearances in the game, while Jacob Williams allowed two runs on five hits through three innings of relief to close out the game with one strikeout.
