Baseball Drops Game Two of VMI Series, Heads to Sunday Rubber Match

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Ben Hemphill connected for two home runs in Saturday's matinee against VMI; however, the Keydets' offense outslugged the Bulldogs, earning a 17-4 win to send the series into a Sunday rubber match. 

Hemphill led Asheville at the plate, going 3-for-3 on the day and recording all four of Asheville's RBIs. Corbin Lanowitz was the only other Bulldog to record a multi-hit game, with two hits. Isaac Turner was the only other Bulldog to record a hit. 

VMI got out to a hot start, scoring six runs in the first inning, following a two-RBI single and a grand slam. The Keydets extended their lead to 14-0 before Hemphill's first two-run blast to left field. VMI recorded a run in the top of the seventh before Hemphill's second two-run homer in the bottom of the frame. The Keydets scored two runs in the ninth, and Asheville was unable to answer. 

The Keydets recorded 16 hits, and VMI's pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts. 

Up next, Asheville and VMI will face off in the rubber match of the weekend series on Sunday, March 17, at noon.
