Women's Basketball Falls Short at Winthrop on Saturday

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville Women's Basketball team fell short at Winthrop on Saturday (Feb. 3) by a score of 65-56 in Big South Conference action.
Winthrop opened the game with a 21-11 lead after one quarter, before Asheville responded to win the second quarter 11-10 as Winthrop led 31-22 at the half.
Winthrop won the third quarter 16-15 in a back-and-forth affair, before Asheville responded to outscore Winthrop 19-18 in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score.
Asheville shot 39.3 percent (22-56) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-14) from beyond the arc and 75.0 percent (9-12) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Winthrop 13-11 off turnovers, 34-26 in the paint, 15-14 on second chances and 23-11 off the bench in the game. Jamaya Blanks led the Bulldogs with a season-high 12 points to tie her career-high for the first time, while Jaila Lee also notched her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season with 10 points. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter scored nine points in the game, while Nycerra Minnis chipped in eight. Abigail Wilson added seven points in the game, while Faith Adams also had five. Mallory Bruce and Dakota McCaughan each had two points in the game, while Millie Brown also added one. Blanks pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Wilson and Bruce each had five. Minnis had three rebounds in the game, while Lee, Brown and Trinity Fields each had one rebound in the game. Brooks-Sumpter had three assists in the game to lead Asheville and eclipse 150 helpers for her college career, while Lee had two and Bruce and Adams each had one. Bruce led Asheville with two steals in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Lee, Adams, Wilson, Fields and McCaughan each had one. Wilson tied her season-high for the third time this year with two blocks, while Minnis also had one.
