Women's Basketball Falls at High Point Wednesday Night

HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball fell at High Point Wednesday night (Feb. 7) by a score of 64-52.

Asheville held High Point to 11 points in the opening quarter, scoring 14 points to take a three-point lead to the second. Asheville built a six-point lead in the first quarter off buckets from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter, Abigail Wilson and Jaila Lee. Asheville would lead by as many as six in the opening quarter.

High Point responded in the second quarter outscoring Asheville 21-14 to take a four-point lead to the half.

Asheville more than doubled up High Point in the third quarter 15-7, with High Point leading for the first seven minutes of the third quarter. Asheville rallied to tie the game at 39 with just over three minutes to play in the period, finishing the quarter on a 7-0 run through the last five and a half minutes to take a 43-39 lead to the fourth.

Asheville built its lead to five through the first minute-plus of the fourth quarter, before High Point rallied to tie the game at 48 with five minutes to play. High Point then captured momentum with a late run to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 31.7 percent (19-60), just 12.5 percent (2-16) from long range and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the charity stripe in the game. Asheville outscored High Point 10-8 off turnovers and 11-6 off second chances in the game. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with a game-high 20 points on the night, her fifth 20-point effort of the season. Mallory Bruce and Lee each added 10 points in the game, with Lee eclipsing 300 points in her college career. Wilson and Jamaya Blanks each had six points in the game, while Nycerra Minnis had two. Asheville out-worked High Point on the glass 44-32, led by a new career-high for Lee with 10 boards. Blanks and Minnis each pulled down seven, with Blanks eclipsing 300 rebounds for her college career and Minnis surpassing the 150 mark. Brooks-Sumpter grabbed six boards to bring her career total to 450, while Bruce had four and Wilson had three. Faith Adams had two to surpass 250 for her career, while Millie Brown also had one. Brooks-Sumpter and Adams each had three assists in the game, while Lee also had two. Brooks-Sumpter led Asheville with two steals in the game, while Bruce and Adams each had one. Wilson also recorded both of Asheville's blocks in the game.

The Bulldogs return to the floor on Saturday (Feb. 10) to host USC Upstate in the latest installment of the Ingles I-26 Rivalry. It will also be the team's annual Play 4 Kay Game. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena, with video, live stats and audio available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
