Women's Basketball Battles but Falls to Longwood on Wednesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Women's Basketball team battled but fell at home to Longwood on Wednesday (Feb. 21) by a score of 66-60.

The teams battled through a back-and-forth first quarter, exchanging buckets and the lead as Longwood held a 17-15 lead after 10 minutes. Longwood controlled the second quarter from start to finish, leading 36-26 at the half.

Asheville clamped down defensively in the third quarter, holding Longwood to just 11 points in the frame despite the Lancers leading heading to the fourth. Asheville was able to trim the lead to six in the period, but Longwood still held a 47-40 lead headed to the fourth.

Asheville got the game to within four in under three minutes in the fourth quarter, before trimming it down to four a second time with 2:25 to play, before Longwood would counter by icing the game at the free throw line.

Asheville shot 39.7 percent (25-63) from the floor, just 23.5 percent (4-17) from long range and 75.0 percent (6-8) from the foul line in the game. Last week's Big South Conference Player of the Week Mallory Bruce led all scorers with 19, while Jaila Lee also added 15 and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter had 10. Jamaya Blanks had five points, while Abigail Wilson had four and Millie Brown had three. Faith Adams and Nycerra Minnis each contributed two points in the game. Asheville out-rebounded Longwood 43-35 in the game, led by a career-high nine from Adams who made her 100th career start in the game. Bruce, Brooks-Sumpter and Wilson each pulled down six boards in the game, Minnis pulled down five rebounds in the game, while Lee had three and Blanks had two. Brooks-Sumpter dished out a team-high five assists in the game, while Adams had four and Wilson and Lee each had one. Brooks-Sumpter, Adams, Bruce and Blanks each had one steal in the game for Asheville, while Wilson tied her career-high with three blocks and Lee also set a new career-high with two. 

The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Saturday (Feb. 24) at Gardner-Webb in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Paul Porter Arena in Boiling Springs, N.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
