Baseball Drops Season Opener to Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The UNC Asheville baseball team opened its season Friday afternoon against the University of Georgia and fell to the Bulldogs 11-2.
Both Asheville runs came from solo homers, with the first coming from Robbie Burnett, the 19th of his career, and Corbin Lanowitz connected for the second homer. Lanowtiz's home run is the first in his college career. The two home runs would be Asheville's only hits of the game. Burnett and Lanowitz both finished 1-for-4.
Cole Schiff got the first start of the season for Asheville and pitched the first three innings, giving up two hits, one run (earned), walking five, and striking out three. Brett Johnson, Jacob Williams, Isaac Gonzales, and Branden Barna all made relief appearances, with Johnson suffering the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Burnett helped Asheville get on the board first with his home run to left field in the top of the third. Georgia answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run of its own to tie the game 1-1.
In the fourth and fifth innings, Georgia would connect for a two-run home run in each inning to take a 5-1 lead. Lanowitz cut Georgia's lead down to three in the top of the sixth, but that would be as close as Asheville would get, as Georgia scored two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Asheville and Georgia will square off in game two of the series tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. from Foley Field.
