Bulldogs Drop Road Contest to George Mason

12.03.2024 | Men's Basketball

FAIRFAX, Va. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team ended its 7-game season-opening road stretch on Tuesday evening with a 74-52 loss against George Mason.

Jordan Marsh and Toyaz Solomon combined for 29 of Asheville's 52 points, with all of Marsh's point production coming in the first half (16 points) and eight of Solomon's 13 points also coming in the first 20 minutes of action. Jemal Davis was the only other Bulldog to score in the first half.

Five Bulldogs entered the scoring column in the second half, with Connor Dubsky and Sage Tolentino leading with six points each. Under the basket, Aidan Rubio, Solomon, and Davis led the team with four rebounds each. Marsh, Rubio, and Fletcher Abee had two assists each, and Solomon, Davis, Marsh, and Banks had two steals apiece. The Bulldogs shot 38.5% from the field (20-52) and 23.5% from the 3-point range (4-17).

Asheville's offense took advantage of 18 Patriot turnovers, as the Bulldogs outscored the Patriots 26-13 on turnovers and 7-6 on fastbreaks.

Asheville got out to an early lead with an old-fashioned 3-pointer from Marsh to start the contest. After the Patriots tied the score with a 3-pointer, Marsh answered with a jumper, and Solomon added to Asheville's lead with a dunk to put the Bulldogs ahead by four. The Patriots took their first lead of the night and extended it to three points before a jumper from Marsh and a 3-pointer from Solomon put the Dogs back ahead by two (12-10). There would be two ties and three lead changes over the next 5:24, with a jumper from George Mason's Zach Anderson putting the Patriots in the lead for good for the rest of the game. Marsh ended the first half with a jumper to make the score 34-26 out of the break. The Patriots opened the second half on a 17-3 run and never looked back.

The Bulldogs' next contest will be their first game of the season in Kimmel Arena, as Asheville takes on St. Andrews in their home opener at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 7.
