GAME PREVIEW: Asheville Heads to Wilmington for Final Road Contest of 2024

GAME DETAILS 

LAST TIME OUT 

  • The Bulldogs hit the century mark for the second time this season, as Asheville defeated VUL 114-60 on Thursday, Dec. 19, in Kimmel Arena. 
  • Thursday's win marks Asheville's fifth consecutive win, as the Bulldogs are now 5-0 at home and 8-4 on the season. 
  • The Bulldogs have seven double-digit wins this season, with their smallest margin of victory being eight points (against SEMO on Nov. 22) and their largest being 56 points (against St. Andrews on Dec. 7).
  • Josh Banks and Kameron Taylor led Asheville's offense on Thursday with 21 points apiece. Banks had six 3-pointers, Taylor went 8-13 from the field and had six rebounds and four assists. 
  • Toyaz Solomon recorded his third double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. 
  • Connor Dubsky was the final Bulldog in double-figures with 17 points, going 5-15 from 3-point range. 
  • All 12 Bulldogs that played on Thursday found their way into the scoring column. 

BULLDOGS ON THE COURT 

  • Banks and Solomon have swapped spots as Asheville's leading scorer once again, as Banks is averaging 15.6 points following last night's performance, and Solomon is averaging 15.3. 
  • Banks is second on the team with a .403 3-point percentage and is 29-72 from distance. 
  • Solomon has a team-high .592 field goal percentage as he is 77-130 from the field. The senior leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game and 12 blocks. 
  • Jordan Marsh follows with 13.5 points a game and leads the team with 46 assists and 18 steals. 
  • Fletcher Abee is the final Bulldog averaging double figures with 11.9 points per game. He leads the team with a .465 3-point shooting percentage, as he is 33-71 from distance. 
  • Among Big South leaders, Abee and Banks lead the league in 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals per game (3.0 and 2.9). Abee is No. 25 in the nation in 3-point percentage. 
  • Marsh leads the league in free throw percentage with a .895, is No. 4 in assists (3.8 apg), and No. 5 in steals (1.5 avg/g). 
  • Greg Gantt Jr. leads the league in assist/turnover ratio (2.4)
  • Solomon is No. 2 in field goal percentage and No. 3 in rebounding. 
  • Banks and Solomon check in at No. 3 and No. 5 in the league in scoring. 
  • As a team, Asheville leads the Big South in 3-point field goals made, averaging 9.1 per game, and opponent field goal percentage, as Asheville is limiting its opponents to a .301 3-point shooting percentage. 
  • The Bulldogs lead the league in assist/turnover ratio (1.31), assists (15.67 avg/g), and blocked shots (3.92 avg/g). 

BULLDOGS vs. SEAHAWKS OVER THE YEARS 

  • Asheville and UNCW faced off in the Bulldogs' home opener last season and the Seahawks picked up an 83-66 victory. 
    Saturday's game will be the first time the Bulldogs have played in Wilmington since Nov. 11, 2012. 
    Asheville is 8-19 against the Seahawks, the two programs' first meeting being during the 1964-65 season. 

A LOOK AT UNCW

  • The Seahawks enter this season with a similar roster scenario as Asheville, as UNCW returns seven letterwinners, lost nine from last season and welcomed 10 newcomers to their program. 
  • Similar to Asheville, the Seahawks posted back-to-back 20+ win seasons, as UNCW had 24 wins in 2022-23 and 21 last season. 
  • The Seahawks have faced some tough competition already this season, as UNCW traveled to No. 1 Kansas and fell 84-66 for their first loss of the season. Their other losses came against Colgate and Howard. 
  • The Seahawks defeated Big South rivals USC Upstate 89-85 and up-the-mountain foes App State 76-61. 
  • Donovan Newby is the Seahawks' leading scorer, averaging 16.5 points a game. He is one of two Seahawks who has played and started in all 11 contests. He leads the team with 33 assists. 
  • Khamari McGriff is second on the team, averaging 12.4 points a game. He leads the team with a .697 field goal percentage, as he is 53-76 from the field. 
  • Noah Ross is the final Seahawk, averaging double-figures with 10.1 points per game. He is averaging a team-high 7.3 boards per game. 
  • Harlan Obioha leads UNCW with 16 blocks. 
  • Joshua Corbin is the team's leading 3-point shooter, with a .323 3-point percentage (21-65). 
  • The Seahawks are No. 4 in the nation in free throws made per game (20.1) and tied for sixth for free throw attempts per game (26.8).
