Bulldogs Cruise Past USC Upstate for Senior Night Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer cruised past USC Upstate for a 4-1 Senior Night victory on Saturday (Nov. 2) in the latest installment of the Ingles I-26 Rivalry.

The teams traded offensive looks throughout the first half, with Asheville ultimately breaking through in the 44th minute for the game's first goal and a 1-0 lead. A scramble in the box had the ball find the feet of Charlie Wood, who turned and fired through a crowd to beat the USC Upstate keeper as Asheville would take a 1-0 lead to the half.

Xander Naguib got the half started in a big way, scoring his first career goal in the 46th minute after a cross in from Myles Edmondson led to a scramble in the box and a failed USC Upstate clear. Naguib sent a rocket to the top of the net for his first goal as a Bulldog and a 2-0 Asheville lead. In the 51st minute, Aysa Hamid was able to build on the Bulldog lead as he created a turnover off an Upstate defender in the box then was able to score in the low right corner for a 3-0 lead. After a USC Upstate goal in the 85th minute, Michael Wilkerson cashed in on a USC Upstate turnover near midfield on a failed clear attempt and caught the keeper way out of net to stash home his second of the season and his third as a Bulldog from a long way out. Wilkerson's goal brought the match to its final score.

Asheville outshot Upstate 22-9 in the match, including 16-3 in shots on target in the match. Asheville also edged USC Upstate 4-3 in corner kicks in the match. Louis Beckett matched his career high with four shots in the match including three on target, while Wood posted a new career-high with three shots in the match while Seth Hammond also had three shots. Jack Steel and Miller Hayden each posted two shots in the match, with Steel setting a new career-high. Wilkerson, Brendan Herb, Conor Behan, Edvin Grolimund, Heath Flathau, Hamid, Emilio Figeuro-Morales and Naguib each had one shot in the match. Charlie Farrar (7-3-4) earned the win between the pipes making two saves, while Ian McGill also played the last 28 minutes in net.Â

The Bulldogs (7-3-4, 3-2-2 Big South Conference) earn the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big South Conference tournament. Asheville will take on 5-seed Longwood at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 6) in the first round, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. This marks the first time since 2015-2016 that Asheville is in the Big South Conference tournament in back-to-back years.
